New movies: April 2023

The Super Mario Bros. Movie

Release date: April 5, 2023

After the success of The Last of Us, the animated movie The Super Mario Bros. Movie is highly anticipated. The trailers suggest that the movie will feature familiar elements from the long-running Nintendo franchise, such as karting, Donkey Kong, mushrooms, and of course, Mario, Luigi, Princess Peach, Toad, and Bowser. Production company Illumination, known for their family-friendly entertainment like Despicable Me/Minions, is behind the movie. Although Chris Pratt’s casting as the voice of Mario was controversial, his Lego Movie charm could add some much-needed bounce to the film.

Evil Dead Rise

Release date: April 21, 2023

The first Evil Dead film in a decade moves away from the familiar cabin in the woods setting, but that demonic book is still stirring up nightmares for anyone foolish enough to dip in. This time, the story takes place in a Los Angeles apartment, where a family is torn apart by those familiar trash-talking Deadites. Lee Cronin, director of The Hole in the Dark, marshals the blood and guts, and original helmer Sam Raimi is on board as an executive producer. Cronin believes that moving the action to the city made perfect sense, as it maintains some of the claustrophobia from the cabin but puts it in a more contemporary space.

New movies: May 2023

Guardians of the Galaxy 3

Release date: May 5, 2023

The third installment of the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise is set to release in May 2023 as part of Marvel Phase 5. exciting and original storytelling that Pixar is known for. The movie is set in a world where every person has the ability to control one of the four elements – earth, air, fire or water – and follows a young girl named Rayla as she discovers her own elemental powers and sets out on a journey to save her world from destruction.

The movie is directed by Brian Fee, who previously helmed Cars 3, and features the voice talents of Emma Stone, John Boyega, Awkwafina and more. With its unique premise and talented cast, Elemental is shaping up to be one of the most anticipated animated movies of 2023.

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom

Release date: December 16, 2023

After the success of 2018’s Aquaman, it was only a matter of time before we got a sequel. Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom sees Jason Momoa return as the titular hero, with Amber Heard, Patrick Wilson and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II also reprising their roles from the first movie.

Plot details are scarce at this point, but we do know that the movie will see Aquaman facing off against a new villain played by Pilou Asbæk, best known for his role as Euron Greyjoy in Game of Thrones. Director James Wan has promised that the sequel will be “a little more serious, a little more relevant to the world we’re living in today,” while still retaining the fun and spectacle that made the first movie such a hit.

Originally slated for a 2022 release, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom was pushed back to December 2023 to allow for more time in post-production. If it’s anything like its predecessor, it’ll be well worth the wait.

2023 is shaping up to be another big year for movies, with plenty of exciting releases on the horizon. Ember and Wade: A Fiery Friendship

First up, we have Ember and Wade, a movie set in a city where characters representing the four classical elements live together. At the heart of the film is an unlikely friendship between a fiery woman called Ember and a watery guy called Wade. Directed by Peter Sohn, who also voiced Sox the cat in Lightyear, this movie is sure to be a hit with audiences.

The Flash: Diving Headlong into the Multiverse

Inspired by Geoff Johns and Andy Kubert’s 2011 comic-book arc Flashpoint, The Flash movie will see Barry Allen using his super-speed to meddle with history in the hope of saving his dead mom. However, he inadvertently creates a world with no metahumans, and where Michael Shannon’s returning General Zod is free rampant. At least Barry can call on Michael Keaton’s vintage Batman and Sasha Calle’s new Supergirl (among other DC heroes) to help out.

Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny: The World’s Favorite Collector of Rare Antiquities is Back

Arriving 12 years after Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, The Dial of Destiny will see Harrison Ford putting on the famous fedora one last time. Plot details are thin on the ground, but the film’s glorious first trailer did tease the involvement of Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Mads Mikkelsen, Antonio Banderas, Toby Jones, and Boyd Holbrook, as well as a miraculously de-aged Harrison Ford.

Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning: Part One

Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning: Part One (or Mission: Impossible 7) has endured so many scheduling delays that it previously featured on our list of 2022’s biggest movies. However, it’s now set to release in July 2023. With Tom Cruise returning as Ethan Hunt, this movie is sure to be action-packed and thrilling.

In conclusion, these upcoming movies are sure to be a hit with audiences. Keep an eye on Tech Leaks for the latest news and leaks on these and other upcoming movies.

Top Gun: Maverick

Top Gun: Maverick has been highly anticipated for years, and it’s finally set to arrive in July of this year. Tom Cruise, who plays the hero in the film, will have turned 60 by the time it hits cinemas. This entry will also mark the penultimate outing for Ethan Hunt, the actor’s famous action hero. Christopher McQuarrie, who directed the franchise’s best instalments with Rogue Nation and Fallout, is back behind the camera for number 7 and its follow-up. Plot details are currently under wraps, but the bombastic first Mission Impossible 7 trailer gave us our first glimpse at Hunt and company’s return to action. Release date: July 21, 2023

Barbie, Mattel’s iconic doll, is no stranger to the big screen, having appeared in a couple of Toy Story movies. However, Barbie’s first outing as the headline attraction is a genuinely intriguing prospect. The plot is surrounded by Christopher Nolan-like levels of secrecy, but rumors suggest it’ll involve the eponymous doll (played by Margot Robbie) and long-standing boyfriend Ken (Ryan Gosling) relocating to the real world. With Lady Bird and Little Women director Greta Gerwig behind the camera (she also co-wrote the script with Marriage Story‘s Noah Baumbach), Barbie promises to be much smarter than your average toy-to-screen transfer. Indeed, the 2001: A Space Odyssey-inspired trailer suggests the film will be less a celebration than a satire on a doll whose original incarnation now feels incredibly outdated.

Haunted Mansion

Release date: July 28, 2023

Disney continues its quest to turn theme park attractions into movies (see also Pirates of the Caribbean and Jungle Cruise) with its second crack at a Haunted Mansion adaptation. Ahsoka star Rosario Dawson plays a single mom who moves into a creepy haunted mansion – the clue’s in the title – with her nine-year-old son (Chase W. Dillon). Exorcism advice will be available courtesy of an all-star cast featuring LaKeith Stanfield, Owen Wilson, Tiffany Haddish, Danny DeVito, and Jamie Lee Curtis. This being the House of Mouse, the scares are likely to be of the jumpy variety rather than the kind that gives you nightmares. But, with The Heat, Ghostbusters, and Parks and Recreation writer Katie Dippold on scripting duties, there’ll hopefully be plenty of laughs, too.

TMNT: Mutant Mayhem

Release date: August 4, 2023

The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are back in action in TMNT: Mutant Mayhem. The plot details are currently under wraps, but we can expect plenty of action and humor from the beloved heroes in a half-shell. With a talented voice cast that includes Seth Rogen, Jason Sudeikis, and Olivia Munn, this is sure to be a fun ride for fans of the franchise.

After the success of the first part, Dune: Part Two is set to release on November 10, 2023. The movie is directed by Denis Villeneuve and stars Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Oscar Isaac, and Josh Brolin. The first part of the movie was a huge success, and fans are eagerly waiting for the second part. The movie is based on the novel of the same name by Frank Herbert and follows the story of Paul Atreides, a young man with a destiny greater than he could ever imagine.

The movie is expected to be a visual spectacle, with stunning visuals and breathtaking action sequences. The first part of the movie received critical acclaim for its visuals and storytelling, and fans are hoping that the second part will be just as good, if not better.

November 2023 is shaping up to be an exciting month for movie lovers, with two highly anticipated movies set to release.
