Samsung decided to skip the Fan Edition of the Galaxy S22 last year, but rumors suggest that the Korean giant will release a Galaxy S23 FE in 2023. The FE smartphones have traditionally offered nearly top-tier specs at a slightly lower price than the flagship Galaxy S lineup. Despite the S21 FE’s lackluster value proposition last year, the upcoming Fan Edition is expected to be the smartphone to get in 2023 if you don’t want to go all out.
Galaxy S23 FE, Snapdragon, and TSMC: Middling performance begone!
Calvin Wankhede / Android Authority
The Galaxy S23 FE is expected to get the same performance throttling fix as the Galaxy S23. The new Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chip found in the Galaxy S23 is a lot more efficient than previous flagship chips, which required a great deal of power to reach peak performance. The Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1, which is expected to be used in the upcoming S23 FE, is still more efficient than the S21 FE’s Snapdragon 888 and Samsung’s Exynos 2100. Anecdotally, the Exynos-powered S21 FE exhibits throttling in medium-to-heavy workloads even before it can become noticeably warm, resulting in unpredictable UI stutters.

While that’s certainly enough for most users, it’s not quite as future-proof as the 8GB/256GB combo found on the Galaxy S23. With more demanding apps and games on the horizon, it’s always better to have more RAM and storage at your disposal.
The Samsung Galaxy S23 FE is shaping up to be a solid mid-range smartphone with some notable upgrades over its predecessor. With a more powerful chipset, better battery life, and improved camera hardware, it’s sure to be a hit with consumers looking for a high-quality device at a reasonable price point.
Of course, we’ll have to wait until the phone is officially announced to see how it stacks up against the competition. But based on what we know so far, the Galaxy S23 FE looks like a winner.

Upgrade Alert: Samsung Galaxy S23 FE to Feature 8GB RAM
The Samsung Galaxy S23 Fan Edition (FE) is set to receive a major upgrade in 2023. The base model of the smartphone will now come with 8GB of RAM, up from the 6GB included in the previous year’s model. While 6GB of RAM is not woefully inadequate, larger apps tend to get kicked out of memory while multitasking. It’s unclear why Samsung chose to skimp on RAM last year, especially as most $700 smartphones offered at least 8GB of RAM in 2022. However, the upgrade to 8GB RAM in the upcoming Fan Edition smartphone should fix this problem once and for all.
Why Choose the Galaxy S23 FE Over the Regular Galaxy S23?
Ryan Haines / Android Authority
While the regular Galaxy S23 is a great smartphone, there are several reasons why you might want to consider the Fan Edition instead. For starters, the Fan Edition has a slightly larger display, which is a 10% increase in surface area from the regular Galaxy S23. This places it closer to the Galaxy S23 Plus, which retails at a much higher $999. Additionally, the Fan Edition line enjoys Galaxy S-exclusive features such as Samsung DeX support and reverse wireless charging.
Moreover, the build quality compromises between the full-fledged flagship and FE models don’t really faze me as I use a case at all times. So considering the $300 difference in price between the Galaxy S23 Plus and previous FE models, it’s hard to justify the upsell. That said, if you’re after a smaller phone, the Galaxy S23 ticks all of the right boxes and retails for just $100 more than prior Fan Edition phones. You get a great deal of value for that extra cash too in the form of better build quality, faster internals, and slightly newer display tech.
